A comment on the coming phenomenon of the internet and communication done around 1995 for a magazine article.

This image is a new addition to my series “About Women” (portfolio 1).  However, it’s not really that new in that it was created in 1986.  I thought it appropriate to add because of it’s comment on self-image which is sadly still current.  Shot and printed in the pre-digital age with perhaps some Dali..esque, Picasso…ish influences, sorry.

The futuristic writer, William Gibson was photographed in the mid-nineties for Vanity Fair Magazine.  The magazine ultimately bumped the William Gibson article for something else though the photograph was published by British Vogue Magazine soon thereafter.  Mr. Gibson cryptically remarked to us that he wasn’t famous, rich or fucked-up enough to be in Vanity Fair.  Some if not all of that must have changed by now, one would think.  LaBounty + Johl did a run of William Gibson pictures for a number of magazines at that time as he had definitely had come into his own with the publication of Neuromancer amongst other notable novels.

The above picture was shot in the pre-photoshop days with glorious film.  My partner, Kip Johl made the metallic eye which I then added later in the darkroom.

These two images were originally done for Entertainment Weekly Magazine.  The second one in the more fantastical setting was done in collaboration with my partner, the artist Kip Johl.  It might be of interest to some that these images were done in the days (mid-nineties) before Photoshop had become a regular tool of photographers.  Very few were using it then and I was one of the holdouts who didn’t give it serious consideration till around 2005 despite the urgings of  leading edge magazine art directors such as Paul Roelofs and others. Anyway, I digress, the portraits were done completely analogue as was our practice in those days (still is, mostly).

Despite his fame (and some of the less attractive qualities that befall some), Mr. Hamill was one of the more professional, courteous people I’ve worked with.

For those who may not know, the gentleman pictured above is Kalle Lasn, the founder of Adbusters magazine and the spiritual inspiration behind the  worldwide Occupy Movement.

Originally shot for a magazine article, the art director tba+d and I had a very short session with the camera shy but accommodating Mr. Lasn.  Though the original is in colour, I prefer the more direct approach of black and white.

Those who may have been directed to this site from the website of labountyandjohl.com may have guessed that the website is no longer functional.   Those looking for the work of Kip Johl, fear not, she will have her own website up and running in the new year showing her beautiful art work and jewelry.  This blog will function as the showcase for my own work in the meantime.

This is the first of a new category on my blog called “Commercial/Commissioned” which will feature work done as the title implies.  It will intersperse with art pieces which I’ll continue to upload from time to time.

The particular piece above was originally done for a magazine spread which featured innovative companies; in this case a scientific company working on a best delivery system for RNA-interference drugs to the body.  This is beyond my comprehension so I’d rather think of this piece as I originally envisioned it: a reference to Dali and his concept of time and existence.   I hope viewers enjoy some of my future uploads.
